Caruaru / Nova Jerusalém

Handicrafts in clay, leather and rope, the natural beauty of the region and the traditional customs of the people of the Agreste uplands of Pernambuco. All this awaits the visitor to Caruaru, which is 130 km inland from Recife. The handicraft market, recognised by Unesco as the largest centre for figure sculpture in the Americas, is an unforgettable experience. Small clay figures, a legacy of the great folk artist Master Vitalino, make wonderful souvenirs of your visit. 
Next stop is the open-air theatre of Nova Jerusalém in Fazenda Nova, where a Passion Play is performed every year during Holy Week. Lunch (optional) is served in a small hotel inside the theatre and dinner is eaten on the Last Supper stage.
